- Fish feeding has been shown to change reef systems, and make fish aggressive. Help the reef and stay snorkel safe, please leave the fish food at home
- While snorkeling, wear protective clothing and pre-applied sunscreen to avoid sunburn even on cloudy days. Hawaii’s UV Index averages 10, which means a fair skin person will burn in 7-9 MINUTES.
Hawaii’s coral may not be as varied or colorful as other snorkel destinations – but Hawaii’s reefs are fascinating, due to the large number of endemic species unique to Hawaii. These species have developed over tens of thousands of years in the relative isolation of Hawaii and have adapted over time with characteristics especially suited to our unique environment. The fish in Hawaii are often more brilliant than their tropical ‘cousins’ found elsewhere in warmer tropical waters. So when you snorkel here, you are seeing species you have not seen before. About 23% of the fish, 20% of the mollusks, 18% of the algae and about 20% of the corals are considered endemic. There are some fascinating species, such as the Hawaiian Cleaner Wrasse and the Bandit Angelfish, that are only found in Hawaii.
