Pygmy Killer Whales of Oʻahu: A Rare Glimpse Into the Deep

These images capture one of the ocean’s most elusive residents—Feresa attenuata, or pygmy killer whales—photographed just off the west coast of Oʻahu near Ko Olina during our small-group whale watching charters.

Unlike their more famous relatives, pygmy killer whales are deep-diving, rarely seen cetaceans that spend much of their lives offshore. But here in Hawaiian waters, we’re fortunate to have a small, resident population. With sharp eyes, patience, and a little luck, we’ve been able to document their presence over the years—including moments of spyhopping, socializing, resting, and even a brief encounter with an albino calf.

Every sighting offers a window into the lives of these mysterious animals—and helps contribute to ongoing research and conservation efforts in partnership with organizations like Cascadia Research Collective.

Enjoy this rare look into the hidden world of pygmy killer whales, all photographed respectfully and responsibly aboard Wild Side Specialty Tours.
